Imayo: Honolulu Museum of Art Catalog
Imayo: Japan’s New Traditionists is an exhibition that examines how historical art and craft traditions inspire Japanese artists in their search for new modes of expression today. The exhibition featured works from international artists who shared interest in extensive technical knowledge of Japan’s painting, textile, lacquer, wood carving and metal casting traditions as practiced before the onset of high modernity in the twentieth century.
The exhibition was shown at both the University of Hawaii at Manoa as well as the Honolulu Museum of Art from 2016 through 2017.
I was approached by the curator of the show, John Szostak, and Chae Ho Lee, from the University of Hawaii at Manoa, to create an exhibition catalog for the Honolulu Museum of Art.
